This adaptation of Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel is based on the charming Brothers Grimm fairy tale. There are 5 characters, including a warm loving Father (baritone), a frustrated overworked Mother (mezzo-soprano), two children, Hansel (mezzo-soprano) and Gretel (soprano), and a Gingerbread Witch (mezzo-soprano or tenor). The children run away from their household chores into the deep dark forest, where they find a delicious Gingerbread House and the cackling Witch who lives there. The Witch casts a terrible spell and captures the poor children, but they outsmart her and escape. All ends "happily ever after" when the children are joined with their loving parents in this familiar tale set to beautiful music.
